[interactivecharts]Pitting for soft tyres under the Safety Car helped Fernando Alonso take the team’s best result of the season so far with fifth – but Jenson Button rued not doing the same.

Alonso was running ninth, two places ahead of his team mate when the Safety Car came out following Nico Hulkenberg’s crash. McLaren opted to bring Alonso’s car in for a set of softs while leaving Button out.

“Fitting the [soft] tyre for the final stint was the right decision for him,” Button reflected afterwards. “I didn’t stop for tyres under the Safety Car whereas pretty much everyone around me did.”

“That decision made it very difficult for me, because my used [mediums] were pretty old by the end of the race, and there were plenty of faster cars around me running fresher [softs].”

Within moments of the restart Alonso had passed Button and was on his way to fifth place. Button also finished in the points, but could only manage ninth after being passed by Nico Rosberg with three laps to go.

13 comments on “Alonso benefits from McLaren’s split decision”

  1. according to their race report, decision was made by more of necessity than strategy

As for Fernando, however, his brake temperatures began to soar after his second pit-stop, and the team made a call to clear debris from his brake ducts (a stray tear-off visor was once again discovered) and – usefully – fit a set of Option tyres.

    1. agreed, turned out to help them in the end.

What an awful click bait headline.

    1. I don’t see what’s wrong with it?

    2. McLaren split their tyre strategy. Alonso benefit from one of the choices. Nothing wrong with the headline.

Click bait is “Dramatic safety car and you won’t believe what happened next at McLaren”.

Poor Jenson. He is usually the victim of his team’s poor strategy calls when the safety car has been deployed (e.g. Great Britain 2013, Hungary 2014). Pitting for fresh tyres was always going to be better than not pitting (and gaining just a tiny bit of track position), so I don’t understand why McLaren wanted to split strategies.

I don’t think we can read a lot into McLaren’s improved finishing positions. Good fortune played a huge part in getting both drivers into the points.

If you consider that Hamilton, Rosberg and Bottas finished out of position due to “collision related issues” and that Raikkonen, Perez and Hulkenberg got DNFs. Without these McLaren would have more likely been circa 11th and 15th.

Hardly a significantly positive indicator. Especially on a track that was more likely to suit them than others on the calendar.

The real improvement is that Mclaren-Honda finished the race without any part blowing up on a track that has little room for cooling… The data alone is very valuable most notably the harnessing and deploying the energy which they did well, the evidence is the engine noise which sound a lot better on lift off compared to 3 to 4 races ago… They themsleves admit that the points are a present and luck played a huge role, so please don’t put the team down by negating their efforts by stating facts that everyone already knows about, give them a break cause they really could use one.

  5. I’ve just realised that if Whiting had let the lapped cars overtake 1/2 a lap earlier (and on the pit straight which was now clear, but they went through the pits again) that Alonso actually could have had a chance to finish in 3rd ahead of Verstappen and Ricciardo!

    1. It also allowed Mercedes to rescue points from the weekend…

Alonso finished 24 seconds behind Ricciardo in the end, but he was 26.77 seconds behind the leader when the SC got called in on lap 48.

Had the safety car stayed out one more lap and had the lapped pack been able to close up to the leaders, with to Verstappen’s penalty and Ricciardo’s front wing change, Alonso could have seriously been on the podium today!

SC Rules changed. Charlie don´t have to wait for the other cars. Would have be nice to see FA attacking MV.
