  1. I’m glad the result is the way it is, with Ricciardo winning and Stroll on the podium.
I haven’t missed a single race since 1994, but this race was so unworthy of the top class of motor racing, it made me sick to my stomach.

Bottas taking out Kimi in an absolutely dumb turn 2 incident. Sainz spinning due to his team mate trying to rejoin the track, then blaming Kvyat. The Force Indias driving into each other like amateurs. Red Bull screwing up Verstappen’s car yet again. Hamilton constantly complaining about the safety car speed, then parking his car in the penultimate corner, twice… Then asking his team mate, who JUST managed to get P2 in the end to slow down, so he can overtake Vettel. Then not being penalized for driving unnecessarily slowy. Then complaining about the penalty for Vettel not being harsh enough. Mercedes getting a headrest wrong. Vettel absolutely losing it and behaving like an utter idiot, in a race which he could have easily won after Mercedes’ issues. Then not admitting that MAYBE driving into your opponent as a revenge move is a REALLY DUMB thing to do. The marshall’s spending half the time not removing debris from the track, the other half being puzzled about how to move a vehicle off the track…

Seriously… This was hardly an F1 race. I can only shake my head.

  2. Hands down a 9/10 race,

All three drivers on the podium well deserved it.

Good recovery from Bottas, Daniel and Stroll kept their heads down not making any mistakes under pressure, well you could say Stroll could have tried defending it but why risk it when it is your first podium in reach. But brilliant, calm driving by the canadian. He is surely on the uphill in terms of experience.

Great racing action all around, my eyes were glued on to the screen most of the time. Usually during an F1 race I take breaks and watch youtube videos but for this one I didn’t move from the couch, even during the red flags.

I wasn’t turned off by the craziness, the Baku track creators had something in mind and today it worked out the way they wanted. I would rather have this than a procession like at Monaco. But yes keep the craziness to just one race per calendar.

Hamilton, well bad luck. Vettel had to be handed down a penalty, that was absolutely unacceptable for a racing driver to intentionally do that, no matter how angry you are. Keep it out of the track, Charlie’s penalty for him was ok, although I feel he should have got more. Maybe Charlie wanted to make a good show and handed the right amount of seconds to Vettel so that he jumps into Hamilton after pitting. Oh well it was entertaining all right.

Alonso , well done, points in the bag.

Ocon, oh boy you messed up Sergio.

Bottas should have got a penalty though, I feel that way.

    End

Messy start from Bottas, but an amazing recovery. No doubt about that.

Stroll faultless all weekend and well deserving of DOTW.

Strong race by both Hamilton and Vettel but both doing things they shouldn’t really do, especially Vettel. Hamilton went very slowly indeed all of a sudden and was way behind the safty car. There really should be a limit to slowing down as quick as he did. He slowed down hugely just before the corner, then a little more just after it. He was at leased partly responsible for vettel crashing into him as it wouldn’t have happened if he hadn’t suddenly slowed. What vettel did afterwards was just stupid though so a well deserved penalty. But I Still think what Hamilton did was a bit cheeky.

Felt so sorry for Massa. His start was amazing and he looked quicker than Stroll until he retired. I think he had a very very strong chance of a win. Wouldn’t that be amazing? How many races have passed since he last won? Such a shame he retired :(

Kvyat and Verstappen have been so unlucky this year. Yet another race where Kvyat looked to have the better of his team mate. Sainz makes a mistake at the start but gets away with it and gets more points. The gap in the points really doesn’t show how good Sainz and Kvyat have been. Same with Ricciardo and Verstappen.

Both Force India drivers looked a bit of a mess again like in Monaco. Not very impressive.

Ericsson just missing out on points again. He was doing well until he got asked to let Wehrlein through. He also was promised the position back if Wehrlein failed to pull away. Wehrlein didn’t pull away anymore than Ericsson when he was ahead of him before and he didn’t give the position back. Unlucky for Ericsson that he didn’t get that point. I am aware that plenty of people disagree with me that I think these 2 are pretty much equal, but I still think that is true. I’d say Wehrlein has had better qualifying pace and Ericsson has overall had better race pace. And both drivers as well as the team have denied these “driver favoritism” roamers. So I think the Pace they have been showing is realistic.

    1. what hamilton did is allowed according to regulations 39:13!
he was slow in to corner, slow after but not brake check, he was controlling the pace.. it was cheecky yes, but was well within the rules! 3rd car’s on board camera of the incident showed vettel running his nose up ham’s butt! he was way closer than he should have been! what vet did was his own mistake of careless driving, and worse he did road rage afterwards! if anything, he got off super lightly, and even benefited from it due to ham’s team cock up as a bonus for him… maldonado last time around had similar incident and had 5 grid drop! and that wasnt even racing or during quali, more precisely it was after quali ended, he road raged with ham!

      1. https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/headlines/2017/6/vettel–hamilton-should-have-been-penalised-too.html

watch from the official video, ham didnt brake check, he just didnt accelerate, as safety car going away, he wanted to maintain a gap and getaway surprise move! when he crashed, ham didnt even finish the turn yet!
noone apart from vettel is driving at anyone’s gearbox!

        1. also this shows the vettel’s maturity level!
          from f1.com

…Hamilton said after the race that he believed Vettel’s behaviour set a bad example for younger drivers watching. However, Vettel was quick to brush that claim aside, saying: “I think F1 is for grown-ups, I think, as I said, the manoeuvre before was not necessary and obviously damaged my front wing. Damaged his rear also I think a little…

Right, he shouldnt have been allowed to race at the young age he was racing maybe…

  4. Interesting point by Steve Matchett on the nbc broadcast. All other things being equal in the race, if Ocon and Perez had not collided early they could have finished 1-2 for the win. Yes, a big what if, but an interesting point none the less.

  5. I know that Stroll’s podium was the stuff of dreams but I would like to dwell for a moment on Ricciardo’s win. That guy is probably the most instinctively brilliant driver on the grid, with the possible exception of Alonso. Ricciardo has this talent of managing his race in such a way so that he is in the right position at the right time to take maximum advantage of others’ mistakes and misfortunes. This does not come naturally to everyone but it does to Ricciardo; Prost was another who could do the same.

Some might say that his five wins thus far and numerous podiums had an element of luck in them but F1 is the kind of sport where one makes his own luck and Ricciardo is very good at it. Well done.

    1. @loup-garou +1, ”Ricciardo has this talent of managing his race in such a way so that he is in the right position at the right time to take maximum advantage of others’ mistakes and misfortunes. This does not come naturally to everyone, but it does to Ricciardo; Prost was another who could do the same.”

      – Exactly, well said, I couldn’t agree more with you. More or less all of his wins are a direct result of others’ mistakes and misfortunes. In Canada in 2014 Mercedes would for sure taken a one-two for obvious pace advantage reasons without the problems they started to face during the race while being around half a minute clear of the at the time 3rd place driver. In Hungary the same season Rosberg would’ve won without the unlucky timing with the safety car, and in the following race Mercedes again would’ve taken a one-two without the infamous lap two clash at Les Combes. In Malaysia last year Lewis obviously would’ve won without the engine failure, and the same today, either Lewis or Seb would’ve won without any mistakes nor misfortunes on their part, so yeah, Ricciardo seems to be the best driver at making the best out of unexpected opportunities that are handed to him.

      1. ‘would for sure have taken.’

      2. And ironically lets not forget the one race weekend he absolutely unquestionably dominated the whole field was when he had the worst luck of all.

      3. Ricciardo seems to be the best driver at making the best out of unexpected opportunities that are handed to him.

I don’t know if you are being sarcastic when you said that but bear in mind that not all drivers, even great ones, grab opportunities offered first hand. When one is driving a car that clearly lacks the pace of some of the opposition, being on the lookout to make the best of opportunities is a talent in itself.

Ricciardo tends to take risks when there is a chance of improving his position, as he did yesterday in suddenly overtaking 2 cars and jumping to P3, after which the shenanigans out at front promoted him into the lead. That is where he differes from his gung-ho teammate who is a bit too hot-headed and cannot look at the bigger picture.
