McLaren unlocked car’s qualifying pace in Singapore – Sainz

McLaren made a breakthrough with their car at the Singapore Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz Jnr revealed following the team’s best qualifying performance of the year in Austin.

The team lapped within 0.9% of the fastest car in qualifying at the United States Grand Prix, their best performance so far this year. Sainz indicated how they had made their gains.

“In my personal opinion, in qualifying pace, it looks like since Singapore we’ve managed to find something on the car that switches on the car in qualifying pace,” he said. “And we have, these last few qualifyings, had a good, decent advantage over them.”

However the team is not yet able to replicate its Saturday pace on Sundays, Sainz admitted. “Unfortunately in race pace that is not the case, as we saw in Mexico or as we saw in other races.”

Changes in the wind direction during the last weekend further complicated the picture, Sainz added. “As soon as we put the car on track with different conditions [on Saturday], the car was responding a lot better to our inputs.

“We didn’t do any major set-up changes so we we know it’s something related to track conditions. So it immediately felt a much better car.”

McLaren have increasingly been able to challenge the leading three teams in the early stages of races, but aren’t usually able to keep them behind. “I am super happy to overtake them and give them a bit of a run,” said Sainz, “but then I’m obviously also frustrated to not be able to hold on to them for very long.

“In qualifying we were eight tenths, one second [off]. In race pace that translates into a bit worse tyre management, a bit worse feeling with the car and that gap probably increases.

“So it just shows that we need to keep working in this direction and keep making the car stronger mainly for race pace, because that’s what’s going to allow us to hold onto them.”

Over the 14 races prior to Singapore McLaren were 1.7% slower than the fastest car. That has fallen to 1.48% over the last five races.

    I like it when the interviews with drivers ahead of races give something really tangible and interesting and not just the ususal PR talk with some personal perspectives or how they use their free time thrown in.

  2. That glitch probably related to new front wing regulations and subsequent direction of air flow to the rear.

    Mercedes figure it out during winter testing in Barcelona, bringing their b-spec chassis right away.

    Red Bull probably some 4 races later. Ferrari and McLaren around summer break.

    Low budget ones lost 2019 entirely. Haas, RP and Williams.

    But Renault had the resources and still couldn’t fix it. Enter new aero chief now…

  3. Guys, A couple notes from a grateful reader:
    ONE—With your graphs, it’d be quite a bit better, this one at least, with a Y-axis that had light minor lines at 0.1% intervals, and dark major lines every 0.5%.
    The current “white space except for a line every 0.75%” thing isn’t quite proper and doesn’t offer more in its simplicity, it offers less.
    And I really need vertical tracer lines from the X-axis text up to each data point.
    Thank you. Just basic, smart changes that increase usefulness and legibility. One more minute of work for each graph :)
    TWO—Running your articles through the (free version of the) Grammarly plugin would spot the typos and correctly-spelled-but-wrong-words that often find their way sprinkled through your articles. Again, just seconds of work.
    I want to add a sheen on top of the already good work here, so I share these two tips that stand out as the two big flaws currently.

  4. Zak Brown said in US that the car is good in high speed and not so in the slow parts, so hard to see how it was Singapore that unlocked their pace unless it was simply atrocious in low speed corners before that.
