Haas has issued an update on the condition of its driver Romain Grosjean, who was injured in a major crash at the start of today’s Bahrain Grand Prix.

Grosjean will remain overnight at the Bahrain Defence Force military hospital in Bahrain. Scans have indicated he has not suffered any fractures as initially feared.

“Following medical evaluation by doctors at the Bahrain Defence Force hospital Haas F1 driver Romain Grosjean will remain in hospital overnight to be treated for burns sustained on the back of both hands after his opening lap incident at the Bahrain Grand Prix,” said the team in a statement. “All X-rays performed on Grosjean came back clear of fractures.”

Grosjean is due to return to action at this weekend’s Sakhir Grand Prix. Team principal Guenther Steiner said he hopes he is able to drive.

“Knowing him, he wants to be back, but we’ll see tomorrow when they take the bandages off because he has no idea what they look like,” said Steiner.

“For me, at the moment, the only good thing is nothing bad happened. For sure it wasn’t good, but he’s safe, he’s healthy. The rest we’ll see tomorrow when we speak with the doctors.”

  1. 53G crash that rips the car in two and he doesn’t even get broken ribs. It is quite simply incredible how far safety has come in this sport.

  2. Romain.
I know we have a go at you sometimes Dude but you don’t have to get carried away like this.
Just take it easy please man ;)

  3. I think he will admit that he is a very, very lucky man…

  4. If Grosjean is not able to drive at the next GP, who is the replacement driver? Any possibility we could see Mick Schumacher?

    1. I think Pietro Fittipaldi and Louis Delatraz are their reserve drivers.

      1. As far as I’m concerned only Deletraz currently holds a super license though.

    2. He should be able to drive, unless the burns are serious. Next week the shock will be just a memory

    3. I’d be very surprised if he’s ready for next weekend. Surely the shock alone would keep him out of the car? Personally, I’d try to sit out the next race and aim for a farewell outing at Abu Dhabi; which I’m sure would be greeted with huge respect.

Either way, it feels beside the point for now…

      1. … but thinking about it… in terms of a replacement, it’s trickier than it seems. Schumacher and Illot will want to focus on taking the Formula 2 title and I doubt either would actually want the added/alternate commitment next weekend. Fittipaldi doesn’t seem like a logical replacement and I don’t think he has the necessary superlicense points? I wouldn’t be surprised to see them choose between Deletraz and possibly Hulkenberg for next weekend if necessary.

    4. Teams can’t simply put any driver in the car. I don’t understand why many fans forget that drivers muts have a superlicense in order to race and keep mentioning drivers that at the moment don’t qualify. I suspect Haas is thinking in Hulkenberg like everybody else in the paddock this year.

I agree. ‘What is Delétraz doing’?
