think the “weekend” votes for shumacher are a bit overkill. He was outqualified in qualifying and even though magnussen was it was only because magnussen was giving Schumacher the benifit of DRS that Schumacher didn’t lose position to Hamilton much earlier. Yes, The team should have told magnussen earlier not to pull away, but, the fact that he did and then hamilton passed him just showed magnussen was faster.

It was only race day where Schumacher was better with the two other events having magnussen do the better job.

If the votes were just for race day, there is no question that Schumacer is a strong contender.

I also think votes for Alonso are a little generous since he qualified well behind Ocon. He was unlucky on saturday, and it seems his bad luck helps him get the votes for the recovery drive. Not that it was bad (it was good), but he wasn’t one of the stand out drivers this “weekend”. Although saying weekend seems strange as qualifying wasn’t at the weekend….

The other driver that has been voted is Leclerc, and I think I agree with that one he was the main stand out driver including the 3 days.

    1. I personally don’t think being only just out qualified is a huge negative. On balance he had great race pace and drove well in the sprint to hold off Hamilton so long. He drove a great full race and recorded his best ever result. Sure there is a argument for Leclerc but going off his pace today he should have won the sprint.

    2. MSC was faster than MAG in the sprint, but wasnt allowed to pass. He confirmed this on Sunday.

      1. He had DRS because Mag was ordered to give him that to keep Lewis behind…. there are always 2 sides of a story.

        1. He wasn’t ordered to do so before Schumacher asked him to actually slow down to allow it, when it was already too late though @MacLeod

          1. @bascd – Yes Kevin was told that but before the call still Mick had DRS all the time which looks he was faster…. It’s not that Mick was much faster in the sprint then Kevin..

          2. Mick backed out of a move on Magnussen at least 3 times before that @macleod. Unitil he really got under pressure from Hamilton Mick had been faster.

    3. @thegianthogweed i went with Mick, mostly because his race craft and driving in proximity was very well judged. He was quick and raced respectibly against Hamilton even with the Mercedes being a quicker car overall. He was quick in both races, respected his team/team mate and looked like a very complete driver this weekend. From my point of view, he was on par with Lerclerc so for me it was 50/50.

  2. Voted for leclerd because of the issue he had to manage in the end, he always has to work hard for his wins, but in hindsight alonso and schumacher are indeed potential candidates, schumacher finally scoring points consistently and alonso having insane pace in the race despite alpine’s incompetence.

Leclerc. Top Ferrari driver in qualifying, fastest Ferrari driver in the Sprint, won the race at a track Verstappen usually owns.

Verstappen run everything out of the Red Bull, but.. at last… was not the fastest car!

Occon was impressive, with his drive almost ignored, and would be my second choice if I had one.

Schumacher was impressive in the race, but was out qualified by Magnussen.

Hamilton had an awesome race, but an awful qualifying (at least in Q3).

    1. I agree as we noticed on the hards (C3) the Red Bull isn’t the fastest on the medium they are but eats the tyres too much. Red Bull is going to investigate why the tyres went away so fast.

So all you selected did a beter then good job over the whole weekend now to select the one is harder.

  4. I voted for Kevin Magnussen. If it wasn’t for engine issues for most of the race, he would have had an excellent weekend.

  5. Honourable mention for the marshal who prevented Sainz’s car rolling away. He really took a big personal risk.

  6. Alonso. No matter how many times his team let him down, he keeps punching.

  7. Schumacher had a great race, but I voted for Leclerc. Three overtakes on track for the lead, and winning while managing an issue.

    1. @ifiamnotwerymuchmistaken Great alias :)

I agree, Leclerc executed with class. I tend to weight a good execution for a win higher than a great performance lower down the field. Great to see Mick starting to shine though.

  8. I went for OCO as both DOTW & DOTD with honorable mentions to MSC, LEC, HAM, ALO, & RIC concerning the latter.

  9. Close one between Leclerc and Alonso for me. Leclerc was the quickest Ferrari in qualifying, sprint and took Max on at a track where he’s usually dominant. I know Max didn’t have the tyres this weekend to get the win, but Leclerc played a smart game of losing track position and getting it back with ease from a driver who doesn’t give up position easily.

Alonso had all the bad luck in the world.. starting with his floor damage in quali that left him behind his rather sluggish teammate. He started dead last on the grid due to his sprint race experience. Then in the race, his team screwed up his 1st pit stop timing and then his 2nd pitstop with a badly attached wheel. Despite all of this he made a mega comeback on the last 15 laps to take points. If it wasn’t for any of these incidences, I reckon he would be in the hunt for a podium battle with Hamilton this weekend. He had great race pace and overtakes all of Sunday.

Gave it to Alonso in the end. One of his most mega races that went completely unnoticed.

  10. He’s not the DotW but glad that Sainz stepped up from his mediocre weekend in Silverstone last week.

    1. His first ever pole and first ever win == mediocre weekend in your book?

      1. Indeed, his driving (not the results) was much better this weekend than a week ago IMO.

I think that Alonso should get the credit that he deserves. His race pace was better than Hamiltons and if that loose wheel blunder from his team wouldn’t have happened, he might have finished 4th.

  12. Charles. While Max is battling Charles, Charles has to battle Max, Ferrari strategy and Ferrari mechanical issues.

    1. @fons And Sainz on and off track. Not that I blame Sainz for pushing Leclerc or being popular in the Ferrari garage. But you’re right, that’s how it’s been feeling over the last couple of months and this time Leclerc drove a great race against all that adversity, including Verstappen driving well too and Sainz pushing him throughout the weekend. Impressive.

  13. Voted Verstappen. Imo he actually made the difference and took pole which he then converted to a sprint win. The Ferrari was better on it’s tyres this weekend and so naturally Leclerc won the race. But I feel he could’ve taken pole and the sprint too.

    1. Agree verstappen made the difference in quali, it’s also not easy to beat a great qualifier like leclerc, ferrari seemed the all round best car this race, and reliability isn’t a sure point in red bull’s favour given perez didn’t run the whole race.

  14. Never knew Yuki Tsunoda is an avid RaceFans reader and participates in the voting for himself ;)

  15. Leclerc & Mick, but LEC deserves it more cause he won the race as well…(and drove a bit “cleaner”)

  16. Alonso and it’s not even close.

  17. Won a race from non-pole. Overtook his main championship rival not once but thrice and in 3 different ways and on a track where he himself lost his 1st win 3 years back to the same driver. His team didn’t screw up in strategy either.

That is a lot of ghosts exorcised for Leclerc and Ferrari
