      I still wouldn’t put money on Russell winning, he doesn’t have any backup from Hamilton tomorrow

         Oh I expect a Ferrari win (I mean muck the entire thing up and somehow Max gets another win).. but it should be absolutely fun and dramatic. Nicely mixed up grid and then we remember what starts at this track can be like. Anything’s possible. Alonso could be P2 after turn 1, who knows. Cannot wait for this tomorrow.

            Bottas is nicely placed for some more bowling as well @davidhunter13. So anything could happen, especially on the first lap.

            I’m expecting Alonso to start really well tomorrow and find himself in among the Ferraris. With it being so hard to pass here, he may be able to hold on and maybe even bag a podium.

   Sainz seemed absolutely sure for pole, so Russell’s late jump to P1 came surprisingly.

      Yes, surprised me too, I looked around and said “no threat”, then I saw russel’s 2nd sector “was that just 1 tenth faster than sainz??”.

            There are 2 DRS zones, and obviously Hamilton is going to back off once he knows he cant improve.

            Are you counting the DRS zone and justifying the difference really? Hamilton’s first lap was on used tyres. He didn’t have the chance to take advantage of hia tyres. Some people are just full of hate towards this guy for whatever reason, even if they sound stupid.

               Yes, I suppose even if one is trying to say drs doesn’t make up for 8 tenths, which is true, then that should be mentioned in the original comment.

            I may be out of date with the rules, but the year when DRS first came in, I am pretty sure you could use it anywhere on the circuit during practice and qualifying. Can anyone clarify please?

               Thanks David @nvherman, it is good to know I wasn’t imagining it. I wonder if they should reintroduce the unrestricted DRS in qualifying. If they did, it might lead to some teams setting up their wings to run best in qualifying and optimal track position, and others using a different amount of rear wing to get optimal race pace.

         Well, hamilton has done quite a good job recently, he had a slow start of the season, which seemed to be due to doing the bulk of the experiments and then picked up.

         Hi first run was on used tires, and his second run he had a dr’s failure. It’s pretty sad you come here only to hate on Hamilton. It could’ve been a Mercedes 1-2

   Alonso disappointed. It happens quite often to him this year: he is faster than Ocon in all sessions, but then loses in the last attempt.

   Russell impressed. Just as I said that Hamilton will beat him this year, he gets a pole.
   I hope he wins.

   Mercedes topped q2. So a lockout was on but for the technical issue for Hamilton. At a track like this that could mean a 1-2 finish gone since it will be hard not to get undercut by one Ferrari at least.

         Andy, having seen the problems Max had with his car in Q3, I wondered if the same problem had been affecting Perez to a lesser extent in the latter stages of Q2. But I also wondered if he could have been distracted by the lap-deleted lap-reinstated issue. If it was the latter, it is understandable for mere humans, but F1 drivers with champion in their DNA have to be able to forget such setbacks in the blink of an eye and focus entirely on the next corner.

    Expect another “The letter of the law” moment at turns 1 and 2, likely even T3 if it is raining, taking at least 1 Ferrari out, probably both. This could be Lando’s long awaited first win

    What a fantastic qualy! So happy for George! We should be in for a good race with this grid. Great to see Norris up there too. It all fell apart for Red Bull. One of the worst circuits to have a poor qualy but Lewis showed last year that progress is possible.

    Question to Verstappen after the race in France: Do you feel this race was perhaps less earned since your main rival retired?
    Question to Leclerc after the qualifying in Hungary: Do you feel a bigger satisfaction since your championship rival is starting 10th?

    They are trying to fuel the rivalry between Charles and Max and turn it into a Battle rap. The two are still respectful towards each others despite the great on track competition.

    The Merc car really is an enigma. To go from struggling massively on Friday, not sure where to go, to taking pole is extraordinary. It seems the car hit the optimal window during qualifying, but it will be interesting to see if they understand why. I doubt they expected the changes they made going in to yield those results.

    Shame for Lewis having the technical issue. Not sure whether he’d have beaten George’s time or not, but a front row lockout was a possibility there.

    The team is getting there. Now they just need to understand why!

    In a previous race the Ferrari was under fuelled and Sainz had to go fuel saving mode. I think I heard or read this track can also be high consumption. If they hope for a SC and it doesn’t happen…

    With the MB able to perhaps go longer on its tyres if George can somehow keep the Ferraris interested he has a genuine shot of a win.

    No stoppages, no SC, no VSC.

    Very interesting performance by mercedes, they ended up topping q1, then didn’t seem as competitive in q2 and then had enough pace to fight for pole in q3, didn’t expect that.

       What I found most interesting was that Russell didn’t have any purple sectors, so it is competitive over all parts of the circuit but not dominant. Does anyone know who the purples were for each sector?

             Thanks Edvaldo. I was expecting it to be three different drivers, so seeing Sainz was fastest in both 1 and 2 was a real surprise. I don’t recall seeing Sainz make any obvious errors but when the gaps are so small, I suppose sliding wide by just a meter in a couple of corners is enough to make the difference. The difference between Russell and Perez is, I think, 0.044 seconds. The time it takes to blink is between 0.100 and 0.400 seconds.
