Verstappen achieves his longest winning streak with second home victory

2022 Dutch Grand Prix stats and facts

Max Verstappen’s victory in last weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix was his fourth in a row, making this the longest winning streak of his Formula 1 career.

Only a small number of drivers have won as many as four races in a row, and Verstappen will be among rare company if he adds a fifth this weekend at Monza, a track he has never won at before. The record is some way off, however: Sebastian Vettel had a run of nine successive wins in 2013.

The Red Bull driver thrilled the Zandvoort crowd with his second home win in a row since the race returned to the calendar last year. It was the 30th win of his career.

Capping a superb performance, Verstappen added pole position and fastest lap, for the fifth ‘hat trick’ of his career. This was his 17th pole position, putting him level with Jackie Stewart, and 21st fastest lap, equalling Gerhard Berger.

Russell looks a threat for the runner-up spot
Verstappen has now won 10 races this year, which with seven races remaining means there is a serious chance he will break the record of 13 wins in a season, held by Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel. They achieved those records over 18 and 19-race seasons respectively.

George Russell finished second, equalling the best result of his career to date. However his previous second place finish came in last year’s farcical Belgian Grand Prix, the result of which was declared based on a single lap spent behind the Safety Car.

For the fourth race in a row, Russell took points off Charles Leclerc, and the pair are now separated by 13. Russell’s prediction that one of the Mercedes drivers could end the season second in the drivers’ championship looks increasingly realistic.

Third place for Leclerc meant he returned to the podium for the first time since he won the Austrian Grand Prix. In the four races since then he’s lost 71 points to Verstappen, whose second championship triumph is now virtually assured. Last weekend also marked the first time this year Leclerc has gone two races in a row without leading a lap.

Although Hamilton sunk to fourth place at the chequered flag, he enjoyed his most competitive showing of the season so far, leading 14 laps as he bids to avoid completing his first ever win-free season in F1.

For the second race in a row a post-race time penalty for one of the Ferrari drivers benefitted Fernando Alonso, who moved up to sixth place as a result. Largely due to a variety of misfortunes, Alonso has lagged behind team mate Esteban Ocon in the championship all season, but has now closed to within seven points of him.

Lance Stroll achieved his fifth points finish of the season, but all of these have been for 10th place, meaning he is on just five points.

Fernando started his 348th or 349th race – depending if you count Belgium 2001 as a start for Alonso. He started the race, retired on lap 3 with broken gearshaft but after the Burti crash on lap 4 the race was red flagged and restarted erasing the first 4 laps from the books.
Left or right he is 1 race start away from equalling Kimi record of 349 or 350 race starts (again Belgium 2001 which saw Kimi start but also not restart).

Alonso did already equal Kimi on most race finishes both now have 278, Lewis is close behind in 3rd with 274 race finishes.

Alonso finished 6th and with that finished top 10 in the last 10 races, he longest streak since Monza 2014.

Ocon also finished top 10 and with that created the best double point finish streak of 5 races for any of the Enstone based teams since 2006.

Max qualified on the front row for the 38th time equally Alonso and Brabham, for Leclerc it was his 21st front row start.

The qualifying gap of 0.021 second between Max and Charles was the smallest since the Portugese GP of 2021 where Bottas beat Hamilton by 0.007 seconds.

Bottas finally failed to reach Q2 after reaching Q2 for 148 GP’s in a row.

Also Vettel failed to reach Q2 which is his 8th time this season which equals the total of missing Q2 during his Red Bull (2009-2014) and Ferrari (2015-2020) periods combined.

Max scored his 5th hattrick with starting from pole, setting FLAP and winning the race. Equalling Mansell, Hill, Hakkinen and Alonso. Max scored 3 hattricks in 2021 and 2 so far in 2022.

Max lead 58 of the 72 laps at Zandvoort increasing his career total to 1,636 laps and with that taking 10th place away from Nelson Piquet (1,600 laps), Nelson still has bragging rights over his possible future son in law when it comes to Races (204 to 156), Poles (24 to 17), FLAP (23 to 21) and WDC (3 to 1 soon to be 2).

With Max leading 58 laps Red Bull now surpassed 5,000 laps in the lead being the 6th team to do after Ferrari, Mclaren, Williams, Mercedes and Lotus.

Bottas retirement meant he didn’t score points now 6 races in a row, his longest pointless streak in his career that started in 2013.

With the appearance of a VSC and SC, Zandvoort 2022 was the 9th race in a row that a VSC or SC appeared.

The Dutch GP also saw the fastest and slowest pitstops of the 2022 season – Sergio Perez for Red Bull [2.09secs] and AlphaTauri with Tsunoda [31.94s].

    1. You forgot to mention it’s your 124 successful comment here. The first on a day with a temperature above 20 degrees celsius.

      1. @itsme Above 20 C where in the world?

  2. Max can still not only match but surpass the feat of winning nine or more consecutive races as he’s now on a four-race winning streak with seven races left.

Stroll’s first Q3 appearance since the Miami GP.

The first time (in a while at least) that Q1 & Q2 ended with same-team drivers positioned around the cut-off point.
    Alfa’s in P15/16 at Q1-end, followed by AT’s in P10/11 at Q2-end.

Tsunoda is the only driver to retire in both Zandvoort races thus far following the long hiatus.

    1. Please correct me if I am mistaken but I reckon Max needs to win 6 of the 7 remaining races to beat the record of wins in a season as a percentage, which I find a lot more meaningful.

      Not impossible but a toughie

  3. I want an article about the ‘Ferrari mess up streak’. That would be fun!!

    1. All the way since Abu Dabhi 2010
