  1. The only drivers to finish in a relatively unusual place, in a positive sense, are the final points scorers Gasly, De Vries and Zhou.

Hamilton, Pérez and Sainz obviously made the most progress, but you’d expect them to given the car and engine advantage they have over most of the field. Their teammates Russell, Verstappen and Leclerc all did what their cars allowed them to do. I doubt any of them would see their race here as particularly impressive.

So all things considered, De Vries‘ performance was probably the most impressive.

  2. Scoring 2 points for the last-placed team is a good day in any circumstances, but when it’s an F1 debut on a last minute substitution, it’s something special. Very hard to look beyond De Vries.

He’s probably just won himself an F1 career out of this.

    De Vries was excellent.

Sainz was very impressive in carving through the field. I loved his non-DRS overtakes.

    1. I agree and would add Max as again he delivers which such consistency and such delta to the 2nd car of the team.

  4. Verstappen had it too easy, went with sainz, cause he had a good recovery and towards the end, out of the 3 people chasing others with soft tyres, he was the only one with a realistic chance on russell (and the podium), then there was hamilton on perez which didn’t look likely and leclerc on verstappen, impossible.

Obviously de vries did a great job too, mercedes spoke highly of him, so was to be expected, but he seems to already have plenty of votes (2\3)!

    1. went with sainz, cause he had a good recovery and towards the end, out of the 3 people chasing others with soft tyres

We might not have seen his overtakes as much on TV but I think Perez’ recovery was at least as noteworthy as Sainz’ (if I exclude his poor start – not sure about the reason).
      – He overtook more cars in the end than Sainz as he was relegated to 20 when pitting early on.
      – he was faster on his Hard tyres than Sainz on his Mediums
      – after his first pit stop he was 30s behind the Sainz (50s behind the leader) and he recovered to within 10s before his 2nd stop.
      – he got the FLAP

  5. Sainz or De Vries.

  6. Credit to Sainz and Hamilton for working their way through to respectable finishing positions, but I couldn’t vote for anyone but De Vries. Did a great job stepping in at such short notice.

    1. Credit to Sainz and Hamilton for working their way through to respectable finishing positions

I think Perez’ recovery was more impressive (see above) than those, especially compared to Hamilton.

      1. Perez recovered mostly just by “sitting out the hard tyres” while the others pitted. Most of what Hamilton gained, up until that lovely double pass on Norris and Gasyl was the same – tyre strategy.

I agree with Sainz deserving to be praised for his racing, also for being clear on his wishes with the tyres. Had the team not stopped him for fresher softs, he could have been on that podium. Really solid race, but then I guess the car really is a lot faster than most of the field too, and he was beaten by both Max and Leclerc on saturday too.

But De Vries, having never sat in the car, just done that AM run on friday mostly just working through an aero program and then getting the call up for saturday, doing a great run in qualifying getting to about what we think Albon could have achieved, and then banking on that and doing a great race to finish in the points, that is a stand out drive for me.

  7. DOTW & DOTD: DEV, as he’s the only one who stood out in both competitive sessions.

  8. I almost feel sorry for Latifi, he can lose to anyone in the paddock… in any paddock, even FE.

  9. Has to be De Vries for me, his race pace was excellent – by any standards, let alone for someone in his first grand prix.

Also Verstappen was good obviously, as was Sainz, who looked quicker than Leclerc most of the weekend (he was on his own for his final Q3 lap, while Leclerc had a double tow from him and Norris)

Not really at all impressed with the progress through the field that Hamilton and Perez made, and while Ricciardo looked decent by his low standards early on, he became a rolling roadblock.

  10. I voted for DeVries, but came close to voting for Mick just for his overtake of Latifi into turn 1. We don’t often get to see a proper tire smoking yet controlled overtaking maneuver anymore.

  11. Next year when de vries looks just like an average driver I want to see your support.

  12. Verstappen was flawless, De Vries was fantastic in his debut, but I gave it to Sainz for a fantastic recovery drive. I believe he had a chance to fight for the podium on pure pace.
