Van Amersfoort Racing have announced Richard Verschoor as their first driver signing for the 2023 Formula 2 season.

Verschoor joins the Dutch squad after two seasons spent with three different teams, during which time he scored two sprint race wins. He debuted in F2 with MP Motorsport but ran out of budget before completing the season, only getting a reprieve to contest the final round as a substitute for an injured driver at Charouz Racing System.

Despite missing three races he came 11th in the standings in his rookie season, and scored almost twice as many points this year with Trident but finished 12th in the championship. He won the season-opening sprint race and also earned his first feature race podium.

“I am extremely excited to return to the F2 grid again in 2023 and I am really happy to do so with Van Amersfoort Racing. It is special to be able to announce this on my 22nd birthday as well!” said Verschoor.

“As both myself and VAR have grown a lot during last year in F2, I feel very confident about the upcoming season. For me, testing with VAR during the post-season test at Abu Dhabi instantly confirmed their extreme determination to further grow, and that suits my attitude very well.”

Verschoor, a former Red Bull junior, won the FIA Karting Academy Trophy and the German Karting Championship in his youth, then won two Formula 4 titles in his first year of car racing.

He won the New Zealand Grand Prix in 2018, and then the Macau Grand Prix the year after that.

“Of course, it is special to have a talented Dutch driver like Richard as a part of our 2023 F2 line-up.” VAR’s CEO Rob Niessink said.

“It might be needless to say that we, as a Dutch team, enjoy very much the opportunity of having a countryman as part of our driver line-up, especially at this high level of racing. Last year we went on a huge learning streak, which for sure will continue into the new season.

“Richard brings, besides his raw talent and racecraft, valuable F2 experience to the team and that will surely benefit us when it comes to further developing the car.”

  1. He should have won Austria feature as well. That bit of underfueling from the team wasn’t the performance difference that day.
