When McLaren announced last month Jenson Button had signed a new “multi-year” deal with the team the question everyone wanted to know the answer to was how long it was for.
Well, now we know – Martin Whitmarsh let it slip during a BBC interview at the Indian Grand Prix:

So, he’s in there until 2014, then…

2nd November 2011, 23:02 at 11:02 pm #184201BasCBParticipant@matt90 they announced a new “multiple year” deal with Button in Korea, refusing to tell how multi the years in that contract were.

I wondered how they do it- take up the option for next year on the current contract and then sign a fresh 2013-2014 contract or whether it’s just a 2012-2014 deal. Doesn’t really make any difference, just curious.
3rd November 2011, 6:14 at 6:14 am #184203BasCBParticipant@matt90 they did not take up the option, but instead signed a new contract for 2012-2014. At least, that is what it was presented to be.

Vettel does, Alonso does, Lewis doesn’t.
Oh yeah, Glock has one too.
Only Alonso’s contract goes beyond 2014.
So I think in F1 terms multiple years can be just 3.3rd November 2011, 7:07 at 7:07 am #184205W-KParticipantMaybe, some team principles maths capabilities match mine, 1, 2, 3, more ;-)

McLaren wanted him to extend for 2 more years
Button wouldn’t unless he got a better deal [ same as Hamilton maybe ? ] including 2012
agreed new contract for 2012/2013/2014sounds like win win to me
